‘Tis the season for awkward questions

Getting excited to get together with family and friends this holiday season? Us too! And whether you are meeting up with distant relatives that you only see once a year or friends that you hang with all the time, there seems to be just something in the air that gives people permission to get personal—maybe too personal!

It’s natural when you gather together to ask those around you about their lives—it
shows that you care—but family and friends can also quickly cross a line and make you uncomfortable. So to keep things (and your skin) merry and bright, we’re prepping you with helpful ways to answer some of those more prying questions—and ways to look good while doing it.

Q. Are you dating anyone?

A. While this question is said with good intention, it can easily be taken the wrong
way. You may love the single life, be struggling with dating, or have just broken up
with someone. Whatever your dating status may be, a quick comeback could simply be saying “no” or “yes” and then following it up by asking them about their dating life.

If the person asking you the question is single, this gives them an opening to share their dating journey with you (pulling the pressure off of you). If they have a partner or are married, it gives them the opportunity to reminisce about the good and bad of dating “back in their day”.

A date with COOLA: keep that sparkle in your step whether you’re single or dating with our universally flattering Mineral Liplux® Lip Balm SPF 30 in Firecracker.

Q. When are you getting married?

A. This common question can come at you whether you’ve been dating for a few
months or after a few years. Family and friends are generally excited to see people pair up and often assume that the next step in your life after dating will be marriage. And while it may be the case for some, this big question is more complicated than it seems. It may be that you and your partner are content as is and don’t need “I do’s”, it may be that you are just not ready yet, or that you are not 100% sure if they are the one.

Remember, that not every question needs an answer. You don’t owe everyone every detail of your personal life. So if you do not feel comfortable—or aren’t sure what the answer is—you can try to transition the topic away from you. “Oh, did you see that [insert a celebrity] just got married?” or “Remember when [insert mutual friend or family member name] got married?”

A COOLA companion: here’s something we can all commit to—makeup that stays
put. Keep that glowing look going all day with our multi-tasking Makeup Setting
Spray SPF 30.

Q. When are you having kids?

A. You may get this question from family and friends who prescribe to a certain
timeline. Now that you’ve gotten married or gotten to a certain age, it’s time to have kids. Maybe you don’t want kids, or are currently trying to get pregnant, struggling to get pregnant, or currently are pregnant and don’t want to tell them. While they are asking out of curiosity and love, this question is more complicated and sensitive than it first may appear.

Not into answering this? One of the easiest ways to answer here would be by
making a joke about kids. Trust us, there are plenty. It keeps the mood light and
allows you to not have to divulge your details.

you’re on the go with three fan faves.

Q. Who did you vote for?

A. Ah, politics. There seems to always be someone at the gathering who wants to
discuss this taboo holiday party topic. While plenty of people are passionate about their political views (and there is nothing wrong with this), this touchy subject is best left for another day.

Our answer for answering this question is to be direct. “I’d rather not talk about
politics” or “Let’s talk about [fill in with anything else] instead” could be good ways to steer the conversation in a more fun and friendly direction.

A COOLA winner: our Oprah Beauty award-winning Refreshing Water Cream SPF 50 is a pick that everyone can agree with.

Q. Have you found a job?

A. Asking about work seems like a great way to start a conversation. It shows that
the person has concern for you and your future. And if the answer is yes, then you
can share all the details and excitement that comes along with that. However, if you are currently unemployed, looking to switch jobs, or looking for your first job after school, this question can bring up a bunch of unwanted stress.

Here you may want to keep things vague. Stating something simple like “I’m in a
time of transition” or “I’m weighing my options” can be the answer. If they keep on
pressing, you can simply state “It’s my New Year’s resolution” and move on to a new subject.

A hard-working COOLA helper: keep the stress away and recharge your tired skin
(and yourself) at the end of the day with our Moon Silk Mask.

Remember, there is nothing wrong with taking a breather to reset yourself. With
any of these questions, you can always politely excuse yourself from the room for
some air, mist on our Refreshing Water Mist SPF 18, and reenter the party refreshed and ready to tackle any topic.
